Title: | Guerra Colonial: teorias e práticas da contra-subversão | Other Titles: | The colonial war: countersubversion theories and practices | Authors: | Gomes, Carlos de Matos Afonso, Aniceto |
Although the Portuguese colonial situation was historically untenable, the duration of the war was dependent on the endurance of the Portuguese Armed Forces. They were able to handle operational situations while the level of violence was compatible with the characteristics and limitations of an army made up of rural soldiers, mostly peasants, who had few technological skills and little schooling. This army responded to an affective type of authority and was able to withstand adverse living conditions, but was structurally incapable of dealing with the escalation of the combat introduced by the liberation movements in Guinea and Mozambique in the final years of the war. |
