Guerra Colonial: teorias e práticas da contra-subversão

Abstract

Embora a situação colonial de Portugal fosse historicamente insustentável, a duração da guerra dependeu da capacidade de resistência das forças armadas portuguesas. Estas superaram as situações operacionais enquanto o nível de violência foi compatível com as características e limitações de um Exército constituído por soldados rústicos, maioritariamente camponeses, com baixo nível de tecnologia, fracamente instruído, com um comando de tipo afectivo e que resistia às condições de vida adversas, mas era estruturalmente incapaz de enfrentar o aumento de intensidade do combate introduzido pelos movimentos de libertação na Guiné e em Moçambique nos últimos anos de guerra.

Although the Portuguese colonial situation was historically untenable, the duration of the war was dependent on the endurance of the Portuguese Armed Forces. They were able to handle operational situations while the level of violence was compatible with the characteristics and limitations of an army made up of rural soldiers, mostly peasants, who had few technological skills and little schooling. This army responded to an affective type of authority and was able to withstand adverse living conditions, but was structurally incapable of dealing with the escalation of the combat introduced by the liberation movements in Guinea and Mozambique in the final years of the war.
