A study on Father António Vieira's formation as a Jesuit. It draws upon the Ratio Studiorum, as well as a few selected texts in which the renowned orator sets forth his own views on the art ofpreaching. Vieira's ideas in this regard are not very much unlike Cícero's rhetorical principles which he sets forth in his De Oratore. During every young Jesuit's formation period, the latter was actually a fundamental textbook, especially meant for would-be orators. As she comments on Vieiras well-known advice to readers of his sermons — Even if they resurrected, they would remain sheer corpses, since they lack the voice that animated them —, the A. highlights classical rhetoric notions such as adio and dedamatio, ars uocis, ars gestus as well as ars mouendi.eng
