Minorias e limites da tolerância em Portugal (sécs. XIX/XX)

Abstract

O exclusivismo da Igreja católica deixou pouco espaço de actuação às minorias em Portugal nos séculos XIX e XX. Até à Ia República, o Estado confessional impediu o livre desenvolvimento das actividades proselitistas das confissões reformadas. Após o "5 de Outubro" de 1910, a liberdade de cultos favoreceu a expansão das Igrejas minoritárias. Porém, na época salazarista, a "luta" no sentido da construção da diferença religiosa foi desrespeitada pela intolerância do clero ultramon-taño, dos bispos anti-protestantes e da vigilância do poder político. A realidade histórica das duas últimas centúrias mostra-nos que a tolerância sobre as minorias tinha os seus limites facto que impediu a emergência de uma verdadeira liberdade no domínio das práticas religiosas contrariando, assim, a opinião de alguns estudiosos.

In Portugal, during the nineteenth and the twentieth centuries, the Catholic Church's exclusivism left little room for minorities. Up until the 1st Republic the religious state restrained the proselytizing activities of reformed denominations. After October the 5th 1910, religious freedom facilitated the development of minority churches. During Salazar's regime, however, the cause of religious difference was disrespected by the intolerance of conservative clergy, anti-protestant bishops, and the surveillance of the political power. Contrary to the opinion of some scholars, the last two centuries' historical reality shows that, actually, there were limits to the tolerance towards religious minorities, thus stopping true religious freedom from becoming a reality.
