Uma expedição ao ethos do Preste João

Abstract

The overseas Expansion was at the genesis of literature of Discovery as achieved great glow in the mid-sixteenth century. Faced with a new geography and newly discovered people, writers, but also travellers, were revealing to Europe news these exotic worlds. So was the case with the work of Miguel de Castanhoso (1564): actor in a military expedition to the Kingdom of Prester John, left us an impressive description not only of the military campaign, but also geography, ethnography, religion and economy the Abyssinian kingdom. This article analyzes some of these passages that make up that account as a moving expedition to the ethos of Prester John.

A Expansão ultramarina esteve na génese da literatura dos Descobrimentos que alcançou grande fulgor em meados do século XVI. Diante de uma nova geografia e de povos recém-descobertos, escritores, mas também viajantes, foram revelando à Europa notícias desses mundos exóticos. Assim sucedeu com a obra de Miguel de Castanhoso (1564): interveniente numa expedição militar ao Reino do Preste João, deixou-nos uma impressiva descrição, não só da campanha militar, mas também da geografia, da etnografia, da religião e da economia do reino abexim. Neste artigo, analisamos algumas dessas passagens que configuram aquele relato como uma comovente expedição ao ethos do Preste João.
