O marcador discursivo 'sim' em português europeu contemporâneo: contributos para a sua tradução em inglês

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to characterise, from a semantic-pragmatic perspective, the discourse connective ‘sim’ in contemporary European Portuguese, and to analyse its translation into English. Based on data taken from corpora, it may be concluded that ‘sim’ occurs not only as an adverb or a noun, expressing confirmation, assent and other related values, but also as a discourse marker that encodes a rectification/correction relation that holds between the text span where it occurs and the previous one. More specifically, ‘sim’ signals the existence of a polarity contrast between the denial text span that precedes it (prototypically, this text span includes a syntactic negation), and the corrective text span where it occurs, reinforcing the preferential value of the latter. As far as we are aware, no equivalent exists in English of a discourse marker to which we may translate ‘sim’ in this type of denial-correction constructions. In this context, a cleft sentence including the emphatic auxiliary to do or a coordination construction of the form not p… but q… appears to be the preferred way to translate the denial-correction meaning of the constructions in which ‘sim’ occurs.

Neste trabalho, pretendemos descrever o funcionamento semântico-pragmático do marcador discursivo ‘sim’ em Português Europeu Contemporâneo e analisar o modo como esta unidade pode ser traduzida em Inglês. Recorrendo à análise de corpora, verificamos que, a par dos seus usos enquanto advérbio ou nome que expressa afirmação, consentimento e outros valores afins, ‘sim’ pode também constituir-se, nalguns contextos, como um marcador ou conector discursivo que assinala a existência de uma relação de retificação entre o segmento discursivo em que ocorre e o segmento, de valor refutativo, que o precede. Mais concretamente, ‘sim’ assinala a existência de um contraste de polaridade entre o segmento refutativo, que contém tipicamente uma negação sintática, e o segmento retificativo, indiciando, assim, que é este último que deve ser retido. Tanto quanto nos foi possível verificar, não parece haver, em Inglês, nenhum marcador que permita traduzir ‘sim’ em construções refutativo-retificativas deste tipo. Neste contexto, o recurso a uma construção clivada acompanhada do verbo auxiliar (de valor enfático) to do ou a utilização de uma construção de coordenação do tipo not p… but q… parecem ser as opções preferenciais dos tradutores/intérpretes para manter o valor refutativo-retificativo das construções em que ocorre o marcador em análise.
