A compreensão da philía no pensamento de Epicuro: entre phýsis e nómos

Abstract

According to Epicurus, philía is the most important concept in the realm of human relationships. Philia being a central notion from which others, such as the notions of ophéleia, sýmpheron, díke, and synthéke, to mention a few, are developed in the Letter to Menoeceus, in the Principal Doctrines (Kýriai Doxai), and in the Vatican Sayings. The purpose of the present paper is to make it explicit the attitude and the stand of the Sophós before the conflicting and disturbed pólis. We can thus surmise that, for the community of wise men, to live according to nature (katà phýsin) is to live according to philía. The art of justice practiced among the phíloi differs in its essence from that which is imposed on the unreasonable multitude, for they cannot comprehend it.

Para Epicuro, philía é o conceito mais importante no âmbito das relações humanas. Em torno desta noção diversos conceitos são trabalhados na Carta a Meneceu (CM), nas Máximas Principais (MP) e nas Sentenças Vaticanas (SV), a saber: as noções de ophéleia, sýmpheron, díke, synthéke, etc. O propósito deste trabalho é explicitar o posicionamento do sophós diante da pólis conflitante e perturbada. Neste sentido podemos conjecturar que viver de acordo com a natureza (katà phýsin) tem para a comunidade de sábios o sentido de viver de acordo com a philía. O exercício da justiça entre os phíloi difere essencialmente daquele que se impõe a uma multidão insensata, que não consegue compreendê-lo.
