Other Titles: Metrical Notes on Aristophanes. Compound words in iambic trimeters

Abstract: Compound words (mostly απαξ λεγόμενο:) in Aristophanes’ iambic trimeters, as far as their collocation is concerned, are studied by the Author who reaches the conclusion that the caesuras of the trimeter play an important part in the arrangement of the compounds in the line, many of these words being placed either just before or just after the main caesuras, and some in between them(l). The caesuras also help one to recognize the various parts of a long compound (e. g. Lys. 457-8) and in that way they could have been useful to an Athenian audience. (1) The compounds may also take up a full metre and so be placed between two incidences of diaeresis.
