“Os mitos imitam os próprios deuses”: projeto alegórico e apropriações mitológicas em Sobre os Deuses e o Mundo, de Salústio

Abstract

Pretendo apresentar os expedientes retóricos empregados por Salústio em seu Sobre os Deuses e o Mundo (séc. IV d.C.) de modo a investigar de que forma ele se insere na tradição de interpretação alegórica dos mitos e ainda indicar com quais pressupostos ele trabalha. Para tanto, examino os capítulos iniciais de sua obra e analiso os pontos principais de sua definição de mito, a necessidade de uma abordagem filosófica do mito e a tipologia mitológica que ele traça, alinhando essas passagens ao escopo mais amplo de todo o seu tratado.

I intend to present the rhetorical stratagems employed in Salustius’ On the Gods and the World (4th century AD) in order to investigate how he partakes in the tradition of allegorical interpretation of myths and also to illustrate the assumptions with which he works. To do so, I examine the opening chapters of his work and analyze the main points of his definition of myth, the need for a philosophical approach to myths, and the mythological typology he draws, aligning these passages to the broader scope of his whole treatise.
