Protéger la veuve et l'orphelin: un nouveau cas de relation avunculaire: (AE, 2013, 868)

Abstract

L’étude a pour but de montrer que l’inscription de Cabeça Boa, récemment publiée, s’inscrit dans une série de témoignages dans la péninsule Ibérique et au-delà, qui permettent de repérer une triade de parents (le neveu, son oncle et sa mère), identifiée par les anthropologues comme l’ « atome de parenté », nécessaire à la reproduction de toute société. Dans certaines circonstances familiales, comme le décès prématuré d’un père, l’oncle maternel (auunculus) pouvait être amené à tenir une place particulière dont l’épigraphie funéraire nous renvoie plus facilement l’écho, sans que l’on ait besoin de conclure à la prépondérance de la branche maternelle sur la branche paternelle.

This study aims to show how the recently published inscription of Cabeça Boa, like others found in the Iberian Peninsula and beyond, is evidence which can help us to identify a triad of relatives (nephew, maternal uncle and mother of the nephew), which anthropologists name the « atom of kinship » and is essential to the reproduction of any society. In certain family circumstances, such as the father’s early death, the maternal uncle (auunculus) may be led to play a singular role whose manifestation is easy to trace in funerary epigraphy, although no conclusion should be drawn regarding the supremacy of the maternal branch over the paternal one.
