Teatro fúnebre: exéquias promovidas pela Irmandade do Santíssimo Sacramento de Santa Justa a membros da Casa Cadaval: (1700-1749)

Abstract

A irmandade do Santíssimo Sacramento da paróquia lisboeta de Santa Justa gozou da proteção e das esmolas dos duques de Cadaval, tendo D. Nuno, D. Luís e D. Jaime sido seus juízes perpétuos. Essa ligação justificou as solenes exéquias promovidas pelos irmãos do Santíssimo a membros daquela Casa, não só aos referidos duques mas também às duquesas D. Margarida de Lorena e D. Luísa. A partir das relações dessas cerimónias fúnebres, manuscritas e impressas, e dos sermões, recitados nessas ocasiões, que foram dados à estampa, pretende-se analisar os preparativos das exéquias, a forma como as mesmas decorreram e a sua complexidade, os principais tópicos abordados na parenética encomendada e a importância que tais solenidades e a sua posterior divulgação representaram para o crédito e imagem pública da irmandade.

The brotherhood of the Blessed Sacrament of the Lisbon parish of Santa Justa enjoyed the protection and alms of the dukes of Cadaval, of which D. Nuno, D. Luis and D. Jaime were their perpetual judges. This connection justified the solemn funerals promoted by the brothers of the Blessed Sacrament to members of that House, not only to those dukes but also to the duchesses D. Margarida de Lorena and D. Luisa. From the relations of these funeral ceremonies, handwritten and printed, and from the sermons, recited on these occasions, which were given to the print, we intend to analyze the preparations for the funeral process, the manner in which they took place and its complexity, the main topics covered in the sermons ordered and the importance that these solemnities and their later divulgation represented for the credit and public image of the brotherhood.
