Literatura e emoções: a função hermenêutica dos afetos

Abstract

Since it does not seem useful at this point to attempt to elaborate a synopsis of a set of essays concerning a literary corpus that is very heterogeneous, both chronologically and geographically (and because individual synopses are included in the Introduction), one may presume that, in lieu of a general summary, it will probably be more helpful to emphasize the unifying component of this book. The main purpose of this collection of essays is to bring to the fore multiple possibilities of literary criticism generated by a theoretical approach that is centered on the construction of emotions in literature. Such an approach makes possible, on the one hand, the close reading of emotional, aesthetic, narrative, ethical, and ideological devices perceived in the literary texts scrutinized herein and, on the other hand, the identification and characterization of the potential effects of these devices on those emotionally engaged in the act of reading these same texts.

Não parecendo pertinente elaborar neste ponto uma sinopse de ensaios que tomam como objeto de estudo um corpo literário muito heterogéneo em termos cronológicos e geográficos, (aliás uma tentativa de sinopse de cada um individualmente está incluída na Introdução) presume-se que, em vez dum resumo em sentido literal, será porventura mais útil referir enfaticamente o componente unificador deste livro. O principal propósito que preside à junção dos artigos que compõem esta coletânea é o de evidenciar múltiplas possibilidades críticas oferecidas por uma abordagem teórica centrada na construção literária de emoções. Uma tal opção permite, por um lado, a prática dum tipo de análise crítica tão próxima quanto possível de elementos estéticos, narrativos, éticos, ideológicos e emotivos, percebidos nos textos literários examinados, bem como, por outro lado, a identificação e caraterização de eventuais efeitos desses elementos nos leitores afetivamente engajados no ato de leitura desses mesmos textos.
