In this paper, we present, in a summarized and panoramic way, the main aspects of the life of Cassius Dio, who flourished in the beginning of the third Century, aiming to understand the historiographic and political conceptions underlying his work, Roman History. For that purpose, with the help of critical resources (with an emphasis on the twentieth century), we first discuss family origin, name, education, cursus honorum and works of Dio. In a second moment, we approach the problem of the dating of Roman History, the probable sources used by the author and the lacunar state in which the work has reached us. Finally, we deal with the historiographical models of the author and his ideas about the political system of the Principate, a regime that is in crisis at the moment in which Dion writes. With this article, we hope to make available to the readers an updated introduction to the author and his work.eng
