A polêmica do Livro XII de Políbio e os Tempos Históricos

Abstract

This study has two objectives. First, to make an outline of the reception of the historiographical method of Timaeus in Polybius’ Book 12 from the connection of two theoretical-methodological fields: the Classical Reception Studies and the Intellectual History. Second, to demonstrate that the methodology proposed by Reinhart Koselleck in the sphere of studies of the History of Concepts (Begriffsgeschichte) and Historical Times (Historischer Zeiten) reaffirms and expands considerably the investigative potential of the methods in full bloom of the Classical Reception Studies, resizing the active role of the receiver when approached by the perspective of the temporal tension (the differential between space of experience and horizon of expectation). We consider that the analysis of the reception of a historiographical method will gain in rigor and critical potential if it is linked to the investigation of the concepts that crystallize the temporal tensions that, for being in a dialectical relation with the cultural processes of a given historical time, affect the very construction of the historiographical methods. In this perspective, it is intended to ensure a reading of the historiographical methods of Timaeus and Polybius in function of their futures past and to restore them to their own historical times, which will enable an appraisal of the modern historiographical positions on Polybius’ Book 12 and the very ‘polemic’ they have established.

Este estudo possui dois objetivos. Primeiro, fazer um esboço da recepção do método historiográfico de Timeu no Livro 12 de Políbio a partir da conexão de dois campos teórico-metodológicos: os Estudos de Recepção Clássica e a História Intelectual. Segundo, demonstrar que a metodologia proposta por Reinhart Koselleck na esfera dos estudos da História dos Conceitos (Begriffsgeschichte) e dos Tempos Históricos (Historischer Zeiten) reafirma e amplia consideravelmente o potencial investigativo dos métodos em pleno florescimento dos Estudos de Recepção Clássica, redimensionando o papel ativo do receptor ao abordá-lo pela perspectiva da tensão temporal (o diferencial entre espaço de experiência e horizonte de expectativa). Consideramos que a análise da recepção de um método historiográfico ganhará em rigor e potencial crítico se vinculada à investigação dos conceitos que cristalizam as tensões temporais que, por estarem em relação dialética com os processos culturais de um dado tempo histórico, condicionam a própria construção dos métodos historiográficos. Nesta perspectiva, pretende-se assegurar uma leitura dos métodos historiográficos de Timeu e de Políbio em função de seus futuros passados e restitui‑los aos seus próprios tempos históricos, o que possibilitará uma avaliação das posições historiográficas modernas sobre o Livro 12 de Políbio e da própria ‘polêmica’ que elas estabeleceram.
