As vicissitudes da gestão financeira: o caso da Misericórdia de Évora entre os séculos XVI e XVIII

Abstract

The Évora Misericórdia was one of the first to be established in Portugal, and, like happened with the others Misericórdias spread by the kingdom and empire, assumed a central role in the health care and poor relief panorama in the city and its influence area. It is on this institution that this paper will be developed. Its importance justifies a more precise look to its economic structure, and, above all, to its financial management. In a first moment, this study it will follow the evolution of the incomes of the Misericórdia, and in second place will be the analysis of the expenditures and its movements, which we recoup from books of incomes and expenditures. It is an analysis that will not be only centered in the institution itself, and to its financial options, but look for to more fit these last ones in the widened specter of the economic environment of the Alentejo region and the macroeconomic evolution of Portugal between 16th and 18th.

A Misericórdia de Évora foi umas das primeiras a ser fundada em Portugal. Como aconteceu com as suas congéneres espalhadas pelo reino e império, assumiu um papel central no panorama assistencial na cidade e sua área de influência. É sobre esta instituição que o presente texto se desenvolverá. A sua importância justifica um olhar mais atento à sua componente económica, e, sobretudo, à sua gestão financeira e às vicissitudes que ela acarretava. Este estudo acompanhará, num primeiro momento, a evolução dos rendimentos da Santa Casa, e, num segundo, a análise das despesas e respetivos movimentos que recuperamos a partir dos livros de receitas e despesas. É uma análise que não se cingirá apenas à instituição e às suas opções financeiras procurando enquadrar estas últimas no espectro mais alargado das vicissitudes do ambiente económico da região alentejana e da evolução macroeconómica de Portugal entre os séculos XVII e XVIII.
