The «New State» Regime, with the football conquests in the 1960s, achieved several political victories, both internal and external. The Portuguese teams, being formed by players from the metropolis and others from the African colonies, would simultaneously allow the exaltation of the values of the Nation and the so‑called colonial unity of the Empire. And, at the same time, they would allow to respond to the accusations of racial prejudice in the Metropolis and in the International Community ‑ which wanted Portugal to grant independence to its colonies ‑ by accentuating the idea of a multiracial nation and the specificity of the Portuguese character. The article intends to analyse how the potential of political representation of football was used in the period of the Portuguese Colonial War as a vehicle of colonial unity.eng
