Flux, pôles, réseaux et aires d’influence: l’exemple de la Civitas Igaeditanorvm

Abstract

Contrary to a traditionally separate approach, this paper aims at combining the historic methodology with the geographer’s point of view. Indeed, the use of geographic tools such as mapping casts a new light on the historic analysis of Roman Lusitania. Mapping the material and human exchanges between the civitates of the provincia is the better way, first to identify and assess their relationships; second, to draw from exchanges flows; and finally to outline their respective area of influence and identify their role in the creation of possible networks. The case study of civitas Igaeditanorum is a good opportunity to explore an interior city, outstanding in many ways. The data can be cross-analysed thanks to different multiscalar maps. They show relationships between the hubs, different from their juridical statute: first by their attraction capacity, and then by their ability to influence the surrounding spaces at the same time. In that way appears a new network of relationships inside the young Roman Lusitania.

Aborder la Lusitanie romaine à la lumière de notions géographiques permet de mettre les outils conceptuels des géographes au service de l’analyse historique. Partant du constat du traditionnel cloisonnement de nos disciplines, l’objectif est d’allier la vision historique à l’oeil du géographe. La représentation cartographique des échanges dans leur plus grande diversité, à la fois matériels et humains, est alors un vecteur privilégié pour déterminer les contacts et les liens qui existent d’ailleurs ou non, entre les civitates de la province, pour en dégager les flux, caractériser ainsi les aires d’influence respectives et identifier leur impact dans la constitution d’éventuels réseaux. L’étude de cas choisie, la civitas Igaeditanorum, est l’occasion de s’interroger sur une cité de l’intérieur, remarquable à plus d’un titre. Analysées, superposées les unes aux autres, leurs données peuvent être comparées à travers la somme de cartes élaborées à de multiples échelles. Indépendamment de tout statut juridique, l’importance de ces pôles se mesure dans leurs relations avec les autres : par leur capacité d’attraction d’abord, tout autant que par leur influence et leur capacité de rayonnement sur les espaces qui les entourent, ensuite. Ainsi se dessine un nouveau réseau de relations au sein de la Lusitanie.
