Nós gregos, eles bárbaros: considerações sobre a relação gregos-bárbaros

Abstract

This study aims at clarifying briefly the relationship between Greeks and barbarians from the Greek cultural perspective. Generally, talking about the origins of Greek civilization means to talk about the origin of the Occident. However, this origin is obscured by a set of elements that put the Greek civilization as having a splendor that we have inherited and, thus, we must always rescue. But what is to be rescued? From whom? In order to achieve the purpose of the study, we should therefore clarify who the Greeks were, so that we can understand what it meant to be a barbarian for a Greek. In this debate, we face the issue of pan-Hellenism, i.e., the awareness that the Greek had of being part of a Hellenic “nation”. That raises the discussion on what the uniting and dividing factors were, and the need to explain the meanings conveyed by the term barbaros. By this paper, we expect to provide new information on the topic, and, from that, reflect on the current situation of foreigners and immigrants.

O objetivo deste trabalho é esclarecer brevemente a relação entre gregos e bárbaros a partir da perspectiva cultural grega. Geralmente, falar sobre a origem da civilização grega é falar sobre a origem do ocidente. Todavia, essa origem é obscurecida por um conjunto de elementos que apresentam a civilização grega como detentora de um esplendor do qual somos herdeiros e que, consequentemente, devemos sempre resgatar. Mas, resgatar o quê? De quem? Para que o objetivo do trabalho seja atingido, devemos, portanto, esclarecer quem eram os gregos para, posteriormente, compreender o que significava ser bárbaro para um grego. Nesse debate, surge o tema do pan-helenismo, ou seja, a consciência que o grego possuía de fazer parte de uma “nação” helênica. Essa questão nos imoõe o problema de discutir quais eram os fatores de união e oposição nessa ideia, bem como esclarecer os significados que o termo barbaros pode assumir. Esperamos com este trabalho trazer novas informações e, assim, refletir sobre a atual situação de estrangeiros e imigrantes.
