Abstract: The essay focuses on the mutual hostility between two central figures in the field of Postcolonial Studies – Edward Said and V.S. Naipaul – and on their opposing perspectives on the condition of the exile. Interrogating the possible reasons for their well‑documented hatred of each other, the essay investigates what they have in common in terms of origin, background and education, and traces their trajectories to try and explain why each arrived at his particular position on the role of the intellectual in a postcolonial world.
