It is an axiom, or just common sense, to assert that the ocean played a decisive role in Portuguese History. How else to view its all but complete omnipresence in those mythical and cultural elements - namely saudade, fado, Sebastianism - directly traceable to the national "character"? Its mark, which is pervasive in a wide variety of artistic and cultural spheres, was also singularly felt in 20th century music. Giving musical expression to the ocean was therefore a conscious or unconscious attempt to reflect upon the past and the destiny of the Portuguese people, thus revealing one of the possible paths to be followed by nationalism. Several visions/ interpretations of History were brought to life, some conforming to the dominant ideology of the time, others out of step with it: Viana da Mota's cyclical vision, Frederico de Freitas' ethnographic approach, and Lopes-Graça's anti-colonialist, demystifying take.eng
