In 1065, Fernando Magno bequeathed the western part of the Kingdom of Leon to one of his sons and with that, he confirmed the autonomist tendencies of the Galician territory, which had been made plain on various occasions during the previous period. Less than a century later, however, it was the southern frontier of Galicia that rose to the status of kingdom, thus claiming the Galician heritage for itself and adapting to the new opportunities for military expansion that were opened by the fragmentation of Muslim power. Focusing on the period between 1065 and 1143 and dealing with the evolution of the political structures of the Kingdom of Leon, but most of all with the strategies of the "Portucalese" counts, the present essay aims to clarify that political turning point - i.e., the affirmation of the Kingdom of Portugal to the detriment of the Kingdom of Galiza - and the circumstances that made it possible.eng
