Vegécio e os sons da reforma militar romana: por um futuro cheio de passado!

Abstract

Nos finais do séc. IV d.C., provavelmente na ressaca da pesada derrota romana na Batalha de Adrianopla (378), face aos Godos, um autor latino chamado Vegécio compôs um compêndio de arte militar intitulado Epitoma rei militaris (ou De re militari). Esta obra, onde se compilam os principais ensinamentos militares dos grandes tratadistas romanos do passado, visava munir o imperador (possivelmente Teodósio 1:379-395) das informações históricas necessárias para proceder a uma reforma estrutural do exército romano. Vegécio não impediu a derrocada do exército e do Estado romanos. Mas o seu tratado conheceu uma fortuna extraordinária, tendo-se tomado numa das obras clássicas mais copiadas, mais lidas e mais traduzidas no Ocidente europeu ao longo de toda a Idade Média (e mesmo para além dela).

By the end of the 4th century A.D., probably after the heavy defeat of the Roman army by the Goths at Adrianople (378 A.D.), the Latin author Vegetius wrote a military treatise called Epitoma rei militaris (or De re militari). In this work Vegetius compiled the most important military advice given by the best Roman authors from the past. It was intended to give the emperor (probably Theodosius I - 379-395 A.D.) the necessary historical background to make a structural reform of the Roman army Vegetius did not prevent the fall of the Roman world, but his book enjoyed an amazing popularity, becoming one of the most copied, most read and most translated classical texts all over western Europe throughout the Middle Ages (and even beyond).
