Chaves da Bahia: prevenções militares para a fortificação de Salvador: 1685-1700

Abstract

O artigo investiga a conjuntura de crise na Bahia nas décadas finais do século XVII, quando se amplia o interesse da Coroa portuguesa em investir na prevenção e fortificação da cidade-fortaleza. O engenheiro João Coutinho produziu, em 1685, um plano para a defesa da cidade, circunstanciado em vários papéis. Estas propostas foram discutidas na época e fundamentaram os investimentos de reforma e construção do sistema defensivo de Salvador.

This article focuses on the crisis in Bahia in the last decades of the 17th century, when there was an expansion of the interest of the Portuguese crown in investing in the defense and fortification of this fortress town. The engineer João Coutinho drafted a plan for the town's defense in 1685, which is referred to in several documents. His proposals were discussed at the time, and were the basis for the investments made in the restructuring and construction of Salvador's defensive system.
