A civilidade na guerra aos olhos dos portugueses de Quinhentos

Abstract

O processo da "civilização" (um conceito que se divulgou, no "Ocidente", a partir da segunda metade do século XVIII) integra, indiscutivelmente, os fenómenos de muito longa duração, mas, a partir de finais da Idade Média, é possível determinar as fases da "cortesia" e da "civilidade", segundo Norbert Elias. As componentes da civilidade/civilização são, naturalmente, várias. Contudo, os portugueses de Quinhentos, utilizando principalmente o "olhar" e o "ouvir" (perguntando aos "outros"), tomaram como importante referente da "civilidade" os comportamentos na guerra. Ou seja, por razões que aqui são explicitadas, viram-se e viram os outros nas suas reacções de violência física. Este trabalho é, sobretudo, de história comparativa, sem obliterar, obviamente, o método interpretativo.

The process of "civilization" (a concept that became widespread in the "West" from the second half of the 18th century) undoubtedly includes phenomena of very long duration, but, according to Norbert Elias, it is possible to establish the stages of "courtesy" and "civility" from the late Middle Ages. There are, of course, several components in civility /civilization. However, 16th century Portuguese, using primarily the "eye" and the "ear" (asking "others"), took behavior in war as an important referent of "civility". In other words, for reasons that this text explains, they saw themselves and others in reactions to physical violence. This is primarily a work of comparative history, although obviously it does not rule out the interpretative method.
