O Vintismo: história de uma corrente doutrinal

Abstract

Os teóricos e defensores do primeiro liberalismo português confrontaramse com a árdua tarefa de equacionar os princípios fundamentais do sistema representativo pátrio. Tinham como propósito, os Vintistas, edificar o Estado de Direito. O que se passou com os jornalistas emigrados, passou-se igualmente com a imprensa vintista e com os deputados em Cortes. Não ignoravam eles a sua História e utilizaram-na, no plano da fundamentação política, com legitimidade. Mas queriam ultrapassá-la. Sabiam que a Constituição que solenemente promulgaram em 23 de Setembro de 1822 era, no mais perfeito sentido da palavra, um acto revolucionário.

The theoreticians and upholders of the first Portuguese liberalism were faced with the difficult task of equating the fundamental tenets of the national representation system. The "Vintistas" aimed to establish the Rule of Law. What the emigrated journalists experienced was also experienced by the "vintista" press and the members of Parliament. They did not ignore their History; they used it as the political base for their legitimation. However, they wished to surpass it, as they knew that the Constitution solemnly proclaimed on 23rd September 1822 was a veritable revolutionary act.
