Ocupação e resistência na Guerra Peninsular: o massacre de 5 de Julho de 1808, em Leiria

Abstract

Inserida na dinâmica da Guerra Peninsular, a "revolução" de Leiria de 1808 evidencia a falta de autonomia das elites locais na condução do processo político. A ocupação francesa da cidade e o movimento de resistência organizado a partir do exterior culminam no massacre de 5 de Julho de 1808. A representação deste episódio contribui para forjar a ideia de que a restauração do poder legítimo se sobrepôs ao colaboracionismo afrancesado, deliberadamente silenciado, e à fortuna trágica dos heróis locais, votados ao limbo do esquecimento.

Part of the dynamic of the Peninsular War, the "revolution" of 1808 in Leiria shows the lack of autonomy of the local elites in the leadership of the political process. The French occupation of the city and the resistance movement organised from the outside culminated in the massacre of 5th July 1808. The representation of this episode contributes to forge the idea that the restoration of the legitimate power prevailed over the deliberately hushed collaboration with the French and the tragic fate of the local heroes, consigned to oblivion.
