As artes no Colégio e na Faculdade (Coimbra: 1535-1555)

Abstract

A fundação do Colégio das Artes, em 1548, pode considerar-se como o coroamento da reforma humanista da universidade portuguesa, levada a cabo sob a protecção e com o empenhamento pessoal do rei D. João III. O artigo procura delinear o contexto cultural e institucional dessa fundação - especialmente a anterior e importante experiência pedagógica dos Colégios do Mosteiro de Santa Cruz - com base em alguns textos e documentos: o discurso de Arnaldo Fabricio, na inauguração do Colégio das Artes, coloca-nos perante o modelo cultural e as grandes linhas orientadoras desta empresa; as normas e regulamentos mostram- -nos as tentativas de aplicação prática desse modelo; os registos dos graus na Faculdade de Artes informam-nos sobre os resultados dessa aplicação.

The foundation of the College of Arts, in 1548, can be regarded as the completion of the humanist reform of the Portuguese university, carried out under the protection and with the personal engagement of King John III. This article attempts to outline the cultural and institutional context of this foundation - especially the previous and important educational achievement in the Colleges of the Monastery of Santa Cruz - based on some texts and documents: the speech of Arnold Fabricio, at the inception of the College of Arts, presents us with the cultural model and the main guidelines of this undertaking; rules and regulations give evidence of the attempts to put this model into practice; the records of the graduations from the Faculty of Arts tell us about the results of model and practice.
