Por que não temos mais investigação interdisciplinar?

Abstract

The idea persists that the border or intersection between different areas of knowledge contains a huge potential to lead to major advances in science and technology. We propose to examine to what extent this expectation has been accomplished, trying to identify the reasons why we do not have more significant and more comprehensive examples of interdisciplinary research. The elements that drive scientific research and innovation in the university context are discussed in the context of the changes observed in the role of universities and the new balance between the missions of teaching and researching. There are signs of an increasingly incremental science, even if lavishly decorated and captured by bibliometric indicators and rankings, to which the promotion of interdisciplinary research may not be indifferent. There is no single answer to the question why we do not have more interdisciplinary research. However, several factors, discussed in this chapter, seem to have a relevant role. Among them we can mention the difficulties in reaching real understanding and mutual respect between different areas of knowledge and the lack of human resources with cross-disciplinary training in the research units with interdisciplinary vocation, which may have a catalytic role in promoting interdisciplinary projects and to open new fronts of interdisciplinary research. In particular, exploring opportunities for innovation (i.e. applied research) in the intersections of technology areas and engineering with other subject areas seems highly important to broaden the interdisciplinary research far beyond the well-known (and successful) disciplinary crossings involving social sciences, humanities and life sciences.

Persiste a ideia de que a fronteira ou interseção entre disciplinas encerra um enorme potencial para conduzir a grandes avanços na ciência e na tecnologia. Propomo-nos analisar em que medida esta expectativa se tem concretizado, procurando identificar as razões por que não temos exemplos mais salientes e mais abrangentes de investigação interdisciplinar. Os elementos que impulsionam a investigação científica e a inovação no contexto universitário são discutidos no quadro das alterações observadas no papel das universidades e nos novos patamares de equilíbrio entre as missões de ensinar e de criar conhecimento. Há sinais de uma ciência cada vez mais incremental, mas profusamente ornamentada e capturada por indicadores de notoriedade e por rankings, aos quais o fomento da investigação interdisciplinar não pode ser indiferente. Não havendo uma resposta única à questão de saber por que não temos mais investigação interdisciplinar, são discutidos diversos fatores que nos parecem incontornáveis: alcançar entendimento e respeito mútuo na colaboração e articulação entre disciplinas, dotar as unidades com vocação interdisciplinar de recursos humanos próprios, designadamente de elementos com formação transdisciplinar em núcleos de disciplinas bem definidos, que possam ter um papel catalisador de projetos interdisciplinares, e abrir novas frentes de interdisciplinaridade. Muito em particular, a exploração de oportunidades de inovação (i.e., investigação aplicada) no cruzamentos de áreas tecnológicas e de engenharias com outras disciplinas parece-nos particularmente importante para alargar a investigação interdisciplinar muito para além dos bem conhecidos (e bem sucedidos) cruzamentos disciplinares que envolvem ciências sociais, humanidades e ciências da vida.
