After proposing a brief glimpse on ‘wisdom literature’, the author of this essay analyses some testimonia connected with the making of the ‘Seven Wise Men’ tradition, namely Herodotus, Plato and, above all, Plutarch’s Cominium Septem Sapientium. He also discusses the main characteristics of the symposion (both as social and literary phenomenon) and tries to establish some of Plutarch’s originalities in putting the sapientes together.eng
