As muitas vidas de Platão

Abstract

This article aims to present and assess some issues regarding the main literary sources available surrounding Plato’s biography, a subject that is often neglected by the manuals of the history of philosophy. With the ancient records that remain with us, by authors such as Diogenes Laertius, Apuleius, Olympiodorus, among others, it is possible to track the history of the tradition on the master of the Academy, as transmitted in classic literature. The analysis of such sources highlights the existence of similarities linking the texts together, which enables us to notice the lasting outlines in Plato’s historical figure, largely responsible for the image we have of this philosopher up to this day.

O que se pretende neste artigo é apresentar e avaliar algumas questões sobre as principais fontes literárias existentes acerca da biografia de Platão, um assunto muitas vezes negligenciado nos manuais de história da filosofia. Com os registros antigos que nos chegaram, de autores como Diógenes Laércio, Apuleio, Olimpiodoro, entre outros, torna-se possível traçar a história da tradição sobre o mestre da Academia, conforme foi transmitida na literatura clássica. A análise das fontes ressalta a existência de semelhanças que conectam os textos entre si, permitindo-nos perceber os contornos perenes da personalidade histórica de Platão, em grande parte responsáveis pelas imagens que temos desse filósofo até hoje.
