Antígona e Medeia no conto “a Benfazeja”, de João Guimarães Rosa

Abstract

This paper tries to analyse and interpret the Classical topoi present in the intertextual strata of the short story “A benfazeja”, by the Brazilian writer João Guimarães Rosa. This narrative elaborates a careful synthesis of some aspects of Antigone, by Sophocles, and Medea, by Euripides. It describes the story´s protagonist through traces related to both Greek plays´ heroines. The questioning of the limits of the sacrifice and the guilt, individual and collective, stands out in the course of the plot and is the theme par excellence of the story. We are especially concerned with this intrinsically tragic movement. In addition, we are attentive not only to the similarity of the plans, but also to the peculiarity of Rosa´s narrative.

O presente artigo pretende analisar e interpretar os topoi clássicos presentes nos estratos intertextuais do conto “A benfazeja”, do escritor brasileiro João Guimarães Rosa. Essa narrativa elabora uma síntese cuidadosa de componentes das personagens Antígona, de Sófocles, e Medeia, de Eurípides. Descreve-se a protagonista do conto mediante traços afins às heroínas das duas peças gregas. Nesse percurso, sobressai o questionamento dos limites do sacrifício e da culpa, individuais e coletivos, tema por excelência da obra. É desse movimento intrinsecamente trágico que nos ocupamos no presente trabalho, atentos não apenas aos planos de semelhança entre os textos estudados, mas também à peculiaridade da narrativa rosiana.
