This paper analyses medical and scientific relations between Brazil, Portugal and Africa under auspices of the yellow fever and Ricardo Jorge’s (1858-1939) writings about it. A long-lived man and proficient writer, Ricardo Jorge outlined in his texts the experiments conducted by several generations. He only discovered Brazil in 1929, when he participated in the hundredth anniversary of the National Medicine Academy, in Rio de Janeiro. He went to the capital of Brazil on a mission of the Office International d’Hygiène Publique, to inspect in loco the yellow fever epidemic that was on the way to becoming extinct. This man of medicine, science and letters in his seventies found in the history of this illness the grounds for the mission of drawing “sister countries” closer to each other, not only due to the leading role that yellow fever played in the relations between the American, European and African continents, but also because it was a valuable thread in the historical web of the relations between Portugal and its former colony. I focus on the 1920s and 1930s, which was when the pillars of yellow fever cause and transmission theories, which had guided the health campaigns conducted in the American continent until then, collapsed. The paradigm shift involved intense thoughts about the history of the disease, which Ricardo Jorge helped develop, alongside other classics of Portuguese medical literature.eng
