De Alberti às contradições da Bauhaus: uma noção moderna do conceito de arquitectura

Abstract

Leon Battista Alberti articulated an architectural concept that makes clear the distinction between the artist and the craftsman. He clarified that the essential work of the architect focuses on the architectural design, that is an intellectual work. This notion was part of the history of architecture for five centuries. In contrast, Walter Groupius put the teaching of architecture in terms of manuality of the craftsman, intending to break with the basic statement of modern architecture established by the humanists of the early Renaissance. This contradiction that the 20th century would not overcome and the idea about the qualities necessary to the architect presents now divided, ranging from advocates of artistic ability and those who claim expertise.

Leon Battista Alberti enunciou um conceito de arquitetura que torna clara a distinção entre o artista e o artífice. Clarificou que a ação essencial do arquiteto se concentra sobre o projeto arquitetónico, trabalho de natureza intelectual. Esta noção fez parte da história da arquitetura durante cinco séculos. Em oposição, Walter Gropius colocou o ensino da arquitetura ao nível da manualidade do artífice, pretendendo romper com o enunciado básico da arquitetura moderna estabelecido pelos humanistas do primeiro Renascimento. Contradição que o século XX não quis ultrapassar e a ideia sobre as qualidades necessárias ao arquiteto apresenta‑se hoje dividida, oscilando entre os que advogam a capacidade artística e os que pretendem competência técnica.
