Abstract: This paper about the Life of Antony analyses the literary elements of the biographical account, specifically the connotations associated with the motif of the trip from Rome to Alexandria. We have focussed on two different phenomena: 1) how the bookish treatment of the historical events shows a conception of paideia connected with the Second Sophistic; 2) how this paideia questions the moral and political doctrine about the imperial government. The periplus from Rome to Alexandria warns of the continuity of a vice that does not distinguish between barbarians, Greeks and Romans, and that puts Cyrus, Alexander and Caesar on the same level: the insatiable greed for power and the ambition of becoming the first and the greatest (Ant. 6.3).
