In De genio Socratis, Plutarch raises some basic questions about political action and the duty to take part in civic life. Through Epaminondas, the work proposes a model in which the philosopher must not engage directly in the political struggle. His participation, therefore, should be restricted to a distanced commitment. With his proposal, Plutarch challenges the model advocated by the so‑called “Stoic opposition”. The Epaminondas described in De genio Socratis is also a justification of Plutarch’s life trajectory and his role as a mentor of the Graeco‑Roman elite.eng
