The Second German Empire invested much effort into the construction of an Armada powerful enough to match the British Home Fleet. A winner from the tactical point of view, the German fleet, with the exception of its submarines, ended the First World War confined on their bases. By demand of the Allies in the fulfillment of an ambiguous article of the Armistice, the German fleet was interned at Scapa Flow, and later scuttled by their crews, in 1919. This episode had enduring consequences in Germany, which lasted throughout the period between the two World Wars, mostly at the political and naval planning level. |
