Dioniso e ira unidos num crime: a subversão da arete de Alexandre Magno

Abstract

We look at the chapter of the Life that Plutarch dedicated to Alexander. In this book, he traces the outline of men of action and relates how they cultivated their virtues. The murder of Clito was the tipping point in the successful life of the great Macedonic commander. It was a violent act, so there is no doubt that it was a crime ‑ but who was to blame? Thereupon, Plutarch describes the decadence of Alexander, and this fall from grace presents an image which contrasts with that former glory, in the tradition of Herodotus.

Investigaremos um episódio da Vida que Plutarco dedicou a Alexandre, obra em que delineia o perfil de homens de relata como estes cultivam suas virtudes. O homicídio de Clito marcou o ponto de subversão da carreira bem sucedida do grande conquistador macedônio. Tendo sido um gesto de violência imponderada, não há dúvida de que se trate de um crime. Mas a quem imputá‑lo? A partir daí, Plutarco descreve a decadência de Alexandre, e sua queda daquele desenho exitoso a uma imagem antagônica àquela de glória, seguindo de algum modo a tradição de Heródoto.
