Abstract: The sociological and literary writings of Basílio Teles are part of the Decadent movement that was dominant among Portuguese intellectual circles in the second half of the 19th century. In the wake of Alexandre Herculano, Oliveira Martins and Antero de Quental, among others, Basílio Teles developed a form of historiographical analysis and refl ection that was markedly ideological. He not only identifi ed the ethnic, cultural and political predicaments that led to the social and moral crisis of the constitutional monarchy, but also put foward a number of measures to overcome them, and thus ensure the organic cohesion of society which was essential to the continued existence of the nation.
