Miguel Bombarda e o XV congresso internacional de medicina: Lisboa, 1906

Abstract

Prof. Miguel Bombarda (1851-1910), a freemason who left his name linked to the Portuguese Republic, got his Medical Degree in Lisbon, at ‘Escola Médico-Cirúrgica’ in 1877, and he became Physiology and Histology Teacher at the same School since 1880. He specialised in Psychiatry, worked as Doctor in ‘S. José’ Hospital and was Director of ‘Rilhafoles’ where he established a Psychiatry course. In 1901, he organized the first meeting of the National League Gruop Against Tuberculosis. Five years later, he became General Secretary of the xv International Medicine Congress, which gathred in Lisbon / 1906 more then two thousand congressists. Professor Miguel Bombarda had already directed for two years the Congress Official Report, which became known across borders. His devoted work in the Congress Organization, considerably helped this remarkable Scientific Meeting and the Medicine evolution in Portugal, namely in cancer studies and the development of Sea Biology.

O Prof. Miguel Bombarda (1851-1910) maçon que deixou o seu nome ligado à República Portuguesa, foi licenciado pela Escola Médico-Cirúrgica de Lisboa, em 1877, e Professor de Fisiologia e Histologia nesta mesma Escola, desde 1880. Especializado em Psiquiatria, foi Médico do Hospital de S. José e Director de Rilhafoles onde, em 1896, instituiu um curso de Psiquiatria. Em 1901, organizou o primeiro Congresso dos Grupos da Liga Nacional contra a Tuberculose. Cinco anos depois veio a ser Secretário Geral do XV Congresso Internacional de Medicina, acontecimento que reuniu em Lisboa mais de dois mil Maria Luísa Villarinho Pereira Sociedade de Geografia de Lisboa, Portugal congressistas. Durante dois anos, o Prof. Miguel Bombarda dirigiu o Boletim Oficial do Congresso, divulgado além fronteiras. O seu dedicado trabalho na Organização do Congresso contribuiu significativamente para o êxito deste notável encontro científico e para a evolução da Medicina em Portugal, nomeadamente no estudo do cancro e no desenvolvimento da Biologia Marítima.
