A vida financeira do Conselho Geral do Santo Ofício da Inquisição (séculos XVI-XVIII)

Abstract

Como elemento imprescindível para a compreensão da estrutura evolutiva de uma poderosa instituição histórica da sociedade portuguesa de “antigo regime”, pretende-se esboçar o perfil financeiro do Conselho Geral do Santo Ofício, órgão supremo e centralizador da actividade da Inquisição Portuguesa, entre meados do século XVI e os finais do século XVIII. Pretende-se esclarecer as proveniências dos meios financeiros que sustinham aquela instituição e os comportamentos subjacentes aos processos de manipulação e gestão desses meios, assim como a sua conexão com os objectivos da instituição e a sua relação conflituosa ou cooperante com o poder político.

On cherche ici à esquisser le profil financier du Conseil Général du Saint Office, organe suprême et centralisateur de l’activité de l’inquisition portugaise entre la moitié du 16e et la fin du 18e siècle. Ceci constitue un élément indispensable pour comprendre la structure évolutive d’une puissante institution historique de la société portugaise de “ l’ancien régime” . L’objectif est d’éclaircir la provenance des ressources financières qui soutenaient cette institution, les comportements qui présidaient à la gestion de ces ressources, ainsi que sa relation avec les objectifs propres de l’institution et les rapports de conflit ou de coopération avec le pouvoir politique.

In this article the author tries to give an account of the evolution the Portuguese Inquisition, the powerful institution of the “ancien regime” society in Portugal, through a detailed analysis of the financial resources of its supreme body, the General Council. Together with their origin it is also important to know the motivations underlying the management of those resources, their connection with the goals of the Inquisition and the conflicting or co-operative relationship between the Inquisition and the political power.
